Introduction
Ducie is the southernmost atoll in the world. It is a reef-ringed atoll reaching only 2 metres above sea level. The land surrounding the lagoon is covered at the edges by fine coral; there are few species of trees, no undergrowth, and very little soil. There is no fresh water. The island is a very important nesting place for several varieties of seabirds.
